Department of Family Studies and Child Development in Shih Chien University is the former Department of Home Economics initiated in 1958.  It is the first one of such kind in Taiwan. Responding to the changing society, the department was first renamed as “Department of Applied Science of Living” when the school system was changed from a junior college into a comprehensive university in 1991, and then further reorganized as “Department of Family Studies and Child Development” in 2004.  The Master Program was established in 2001, ”Master Program of Family Services for the Aged” was established in 2010.

The goals of this department are:(1)To cultivate the students equipped with the knowledge needed to serve for families, children and seniors. (2)To educate the students equipped with the faith and attitude for societal solicitude through service learning.  There are 10 full time faculty in this department, including 4 associate professors, 5 assistant professors, and 1 lecturers. The faculty’s expertise covers family life education, family counseling, early childhood education and gerontology.
The two master programs in this department:
(1)Master Program of Family Counseling and Guidance
This master program enrolls a total of 11 students. The goal of this program is to cultivate specialists in family counseling and guidance.  It focuses on the practice of family theories and the ability for counseling with members in the family.  The graduates of this department are qualified to participate the higher civil examination for counseling psychologist and to work in the counseling psychology units for the society and in schools or non-profit organizations.
(2)Master Program of Family Services for the Aged
This master program enrolls a total of 10 students. The goal of this program is to cultivate specialists in senior service. Based on the seniors and their families, it studies completely their food, living, financial management, entertainment, manpower, psychology, and health improvement.  Utilizing research and development as the foundation, assisted with creative cerebration and practical teaching, it promotes the development of senior services.
